Random thoughts on “Caring”

Listening to the local radio station this morning and one of the DJs started going off on a rant about all the things that he really doesn’t care about…mostly about things that are unfortunate, but simply do not affect him. Now some may have found his subject to be cold hearted…even a bit arrogant, but it was his honesty that kept my attention and I even found myself agreeing with his opinions.

So now I am thinking….tragic events occur every day such as violence penetrating our school system, but honestly these things really don’t effect me. Is it wrong of me not to care? Should I be ashamed that I do nothing to make a difference or prevent such occurrences? Am I ignorant because I don’t faithfully watch the evening news? I mean after all it’s the same thing every night. Who has the most shocking story….do these news anchors really care about the lives of the people who give them job security? I have yet to see an onsite correspondent interviewing a victim of a house fire offer them a place to stay. Imagine turning on the news to find a mother speaking about the tragic death of her child and the new correspondent giving her a hug.

Maybe if the world consumed more visual acts of random kindness moreover the exploitation of violence, we would all find ourselves caring just a lil more….
